"The age of rebellion" (1890-1918) from the book "The story of music" by Howard Goodall

Good afternoon, Authors, Translators and Publishing companies!

Today we will tell about the next chapter «The age of rebellion (1890-1918)» of the book «The Story of music» by Howard Goodall.

Main aspects:

1. countries, most impacted music development of the period:

- France: French composers radically rejected Richard Wagner’s many-layered complexity of music dramas, most prominent of them are Camille Saint-Saens and Cesar Franck (two co-founders of the Societe Nationale de Musique), Gabriele Faure, Erik Satie, they brought a new spirit of modern music; Claude Debussy (impressed by Asian Javanese orchestra in Paris, tried to follow the music in piano, developing pentatonic scale, five notes, prevalent in Eastern music, easily found by playing black chords on keyboard, and inventing hanging chords, return to nature, this was a part of Orientalism and future fuel for jazz in later generations);

- Austria and Germany: German-speaking Jewish composer Gustav Mahler, Director of Music of Vienna State Opera, wrote ten symphonies, had pan-European style and direct musical expression, composed orchestral songs «Kindertotenlieder» (songs on the death of children), had tutor-like impact on redesigning of Western tonal system (serialism or atonality, created by his pupil Arnold Schoenberg); Germany’s leading composer Richard Strauss, composed symphonic poems like «Also sprach Zarathustra» («Thus spoke Zarathustra»), heartbreaking songs like «Morgen» («Tomorrow»), created modern music for operas «Salome», «Elektra», «Der Rosenkavalier»;

- Russia: famous composer Mikhail Glinka (operas «Ruslan and Liudmila», «A life for the Tsar»), Piotr Tchaikovskyi (first composer, received fame outside Russia, famous for music for ballet), Modest Mussorgsky (self-taught composer, famous for music for opera «Borys Godunov», opera was revised by composer Rimsky-Korsakov later), Rimsky-Korsakov (famous for operas «Kaschei the Immortal», «The Tale of Tsar Sultan»,  «Scheherezade», other), Igor Stravinsky (composed music for ballets «Firebird», «Petrushka», «The Rite of Spring», used octatonic scale, eight notes, and polyrhythm).

- the USA: mix-race English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor adapted African-American folk tunes («A negro love song»), early evidence of melodic style came to be known as Blues (flattening third and seventh notes); Scott Joplin, composer of ragtime style (main feature – syncopation, solo pianist copied a marching-band style); Jelly Roll Morton, performer of jazz (main instruments: cornet, trombone, clarinet and tuba, supported by banjio, drums and sometimes piano); popular new genres blues and jazz, not classical music, started to take main stage;

2. inventions of the period:

- 1857 – Scott de Martinville patented phonautograph, new technology of music recording (no way of playing recording back);

- 1877 – Thomas Edison invented the machine (wax-cylinder recording device) that could play recordings back;

- recordings made music available to millions of people across the world;

3. music and British composers in the period before and during the First World War:

- Vaughan Williams «The Lark Ascending»;

- Charles Hubert Parry «Jerusalem», «Songs of Farewell», «Jupiter»;

- George Butterworth «The Banks of Green Willow»;

- Edward Elgar «The Spirit of England», «The Fringes of the Fleet»;

- Ivor Novello «Keep the Home Fires Burning».
